Volanen

Summary

The Volanen are a feathered people whose ancestors fled their homeworld of Volan through a gate to Orbos, where they preserved the memory of Ayoshen and waited for the chance to reclaim their world. ^{*1 *2}

Culture and Society

The Volanen are presented as stoic, disciplined, and strongly rooted in ancestral memory. Their culture still centers on reverence for Ayoshen, the use of pendants and gear tied to the Keor'drin legacy, and the manipulation of Keor first taught under his guidance. Their remembered traditions include builders, scouts, defenders, monasteries, legends of flight, and old martial schools, which gives the people a fuller identity than exile alone. ^{*1 *3 *4}

Recovered scenes from older Volan life widen that picture further, showing Volanen as couriers, builders, scholars, artisans, and support teams as well as warriors. Their older traditions also include disciplines such as the Chronomancers, Drunken Masters, and Tempest Masters, suggesting a much richer intellectual and martial heritage on ancient Volan even if much of that deeper history remains obscure to the descendants now living on Orbos. ^{*5 *6 *7 *8 *9}

Home and Dispersion

The Volanen are originally from Volan, but the present-era story reaches them through the galaxy's sole known Volanen enclave on Orbos, founded after their flight through a sealed gate. Public material centers on that remembered exodus and its descendants rather than on multiple clearly documented migration waves, which makes the Orbos enclave feel less like one colony among many than like the surviving keeper of a promise. ^{*1 *9}

That promise is the belief that one day others would return in a Vanished ship to help liberate Volan. Hidden caches on Orbos and coordinated supply runs through the gate show that the exile community quietly prepared for that return long before liberation seemed possible. At the same time, some Volanen who remained on Volan were corrupted under Shaylang's influence into hostile, degraded forms described as warped hybrids of plumage, wings, spikes, and leathery features with little sign of their former selves. ^{*4 *5 *10 *2 *11}

Relations

The Volanen's oldest relationship is with Ayoshen, while their present-day public voice is most clearly carried by Erlayan. They remain defined by the threat of Shaylang and the evil that forced the original exodus, but their time on Orbos may also conceal an older link between the two worlds through gate-builders or shared advanced craft traditions. Some Volanen factions pushed beyond Ayoshen's warnings and became the Rift Stalkers, whose renegade experiments imply internal responsibility for part of Volan's fall. ^{*3 *1 *12 *13}
